HIKING LION MOUNTAIN

While hanging out in the south-eastern part of Mauritius you must have noticed the famous Lion Mountain, right? If not, this mountain can be easily recognised due to its eye-catching silhouette; a sitting lion. Climbing Lion Mountain is a great way to see Mauritius from different perspectives. At various sections of the hike as well as at the summit, meaning on top of the Lion's head, you will be amazed by the views over the blue lagoon, the surrounding islets, the bay of Mahebourg, prominent mountains such as Brisée Mountain, Piton Rouge, Mont Camizard and the luxuriant green landscapes of the surrounding areas.

Lion Mountain forms part of the Grand Port Mountain Range, situated in Old Grand Port; named Port Zuydoosterhaven in 1638 by the first Dutch Governor, Simonsz Gooyer. Old Grand Port holds a major history about a battle launched on 23rd August 1810 by the British who aimed to conquer the port. The battle lasted for 6 days with severe losses and damages on both sides. Our experienced and professional mountaineer will bring you back to the colonial era by giving you more information about the history surrounding the Lion Mountain.

TREKKING IN BLACK RIVER GORGES - BRISE FER MOUNTAIN

Brise Fer Mountain is one of the lesser known mountains in Mauritius, offering spectacular views over the surrounding areas such as the western coast, Morne Sec, Black River Peak, Le Morne Brabant and so on. If you are a beginner, hiking to the summit of Brise Fer is a great way to get you started on your hiking journey.

Situated in the Black River Gorges, you will discover multiple endemic plants and birds, as the Black River Gorges form part of the less than 2% of the original native forest left on the island. Native forests in Mauritius will give you an idea how the island resembles before colonization by the Dutch in the 16th century. During the hike, 300m before the summit you will reach the steepest section where a ladder is neatly and securely fixed with chains to make it easier for you to climb. Once you are at the summit, take a moment, breathe in and admire the beauty of paradise island.
